suggested route 1

via Glasgow -> Loch Lomond -> Inveraray ->
Dalmally -> Connel-> Benderloch
M74 / M73/ M8 / A82 / A83/ A819 / A85 / A828

TAKE CARE approaching Glasgow from the south - the M74 leads into the city centre. You have to get on to the M73 then on to the M8 - follow the signs for Glasgow Airport and you'll be fine.

Follow the M898 to pass over the Erskine Bridge then onto the A82 through Dumbarton to Balloch and then about 16 miles north to Tarbet.

BEWARE The northern section of the A82 along the shores of Loch Lomond from Tarbet - Ardlui - Inverarnan - Crianlarich is very narrow, twisting and frequently pot-holed! In peak periods it's also very busy and usually very slow !

We advise you to AVOID the A82 between Tarbet and Crianlarich when towing a caravan or in a motorhome!

A BETTER ROUTE Leave the A82 in Tarbet and bear left towards Inveraray following the A83. In Inveraray, turn right under the archway on to the A819 towards Dalmally, where you turn left to join the A85 towards Oban, which brings you through Lochawe, Taynuilt and Connel.

Alternatively, consider another route which avoids Glasgow. It's a little further but we think it’s an easier run either towing a caravan or in a motorhome!

suggested route 2 - avoiding Glasgow

M73 / M80 / M9 / A84 / A85 / A828
South of Glasgow on the M74, take the M73 north and east towards Cumbernauld, then follow the M80 / M9 towards Stirling. Turn on to the A84 for Callander then the A85 for Crianlarich.

5 miles after Crianlarich at Tyndrum, turn left on to A85, signpost for Oban, and follow the road through Dalmally - where the road from Inveraray joins the A85 - then on through Lochawe, Taynuilt and Connel.

local directions  over Connel Bridge

Connel BridgeYou'll easily recognise Connel as you approach by the steel road bridge spanning Loch Etive. In Connel village, pass under the bridge then turn left on to A828 at sign post for Fort William. There are traffic lights on Connel Bridge.

Over Connel Bridge, continue for 3 miles on the A828 to Benderloch. Drive through the village past the shop and the church.

to Highfield Just beyond this 'ladderboard', take first left at signpost for South Shian and Tralee - the junction is situated by the school - onto a single track road with good sized passing spaces and a pedestrian pavement along one side.

The main gate into Highfield is about 800metres on the right from the junction - 2nd right after Hawthorn Cottage Restaurant.

travelling from the North

The A82 passes south through Fort William, Onich and then over the Ballachulish Bridge.
At the roundabout near Glencoe, follow the sign for Oban - A828 - drive through Kentallen, Duror, Appin and Barcaldine towards Benderloch.

Turn first right off A828 in Benderloch village - the
junction is just by the school - at signpost for South Shian and Tralee.

travelling from the South

Follow the A85 through Oban towards Crianlarich, Fort William and Glasgow.

In Connel, turn right at signpost for Fort William on to the A828 and pass over the Connel Bridge towards Benderloch.

our advice

● check 'quickest route' against 'shortest route'

the shortest route here often suggested is FREQUENTLY NOT the best route!

● select as much motorway and dual carriageway driving as possible

● avoid Glasgow city centre

● avoid the Tarbet to Crianlarich section of the A82
